A is for Auntie
This is a fantastic idea I got via Mikki, one of my neighbors here. The idea is to go for 26 days, posting a letter for each day that describes you. And, since I need to post more to my Vox, it makes a good writing prompt for me. (Technically, I suppose you were supposed to start August 1st, but I'll start today and finish...uh...whenever I finish.)
Starting with A, A is for Auntie. Two things to mention on this topic: first that I am an Auntie, and s
econd my thoughts on the title "Auntie."First, yes, that is my little nephew Declan. He just turned one this past week. I very clearly remember the day he was born, starting with my brother-in-law calling me at 3 am to let me know my sister was in labor (by the way, you don't need to apologize for waking people up with that news!), and ending with my other sister sending me a text message that he had arrived, which I received quite illegally in the Race and Sports Book at the MGM Grand. (I was touring it with our new management recruits.) He's a cute little kid, and reminds me so much of Ethan when he was little. I love how you can put pictures of the two of them side-by-side and they look kind of like brothers.
Second, I never much cared for the title Auntie. When I was growing up, we called our aunts "Aunt so-and-so." I think it sounds a little more formal, and, growing up, I was all about formality. I called my mother "Mom," and secretly bristled when one of my sisters would call her "Ma." It's funny, though, how I completely embrace being "Mama" to Ethan, and could care less about him not calling me "Mom." Same thing goes for being an aunt...In my opinion, "Aunt Jenn" just doesn't sound right, and "Aunt Jennifer" makes me sound like a spinstress. So yes, Auntie Jenn sounds just dandy to me.
